Studies on the Resistance of Some Varietics of Pepper to Tobacco Mosaic Virus

Abstract
A study was conducted to select the resistant varieties to tobacco mosaic virus, and to utilize such varieties as breeding materials. Total of 44 varieties, 74 lines of pepper were inoculated with tomato streak strain of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) by carborundum method. The results are summerized as follows.
1) The reactions of each varieties to TMV were classified in three groups which were exhibited local lesion only on inoculated leaves, systemic mosaic after giving local lesion on inoculated leaves and systemic mosaic on all plants.
2) Kimjang gochu, Sae gochu, Fusimi, Taekuk, Wheonggeri(128-2-1, 128-3-3), Tabasco(131-4), Yolo Y, Sandia and 2520(Total nine varieties) were proved to be resistant varieties posses sing L-gene, because these varieties exhibited local lesion only on inoculated leaves.
3) Seoul Kwarii, Cheonan, Mexico, Wheonggeri (128-1-4), Moon bong, PI 152225, Heyston reis giant, Yolo wonder and Cheju were exhibited mosaic symptom on upper leaves after exhibiting local lesion on inoculated leaves; therefore, these varieties were supposed to possess l^il^i or l^il gene to TMV.
4) The other varieties were proved to be susceptible varieties possessing 11 gene to TMV; these varieties expressed systemic mosaic symptomsoms.
5) The correlation between infected index and yield was significantly negative(-0.78).
